The Eduserv Foundation Symposium 2007
Virtual worlds, real learning?Thursday 10th May 2007 Congress Centre, London IntroductionThe 2007 symposium attempted to look past the hype surrounding virtual worlds such as Second Life and evaluate whether they offer real opportunities for learners at UK educational institutions. The symposium was intended for policy makers, practitioners and technologists working in the areas of information and communications technology and e-learning service delivery in UK HE and FE institutions. The event was sponsored by Eduserv and was therefore free to all participants. Lunch was provided. For details about the Second Life (SL) virtual event, see below.
Virtual symposium - streamingAll the presentations during the day were streamed live into Second Life and on the Web. There were three virtual venues at which the streams could be viewed:
We are grateful to Alan Levine at NMC and Lori Bell at the Alliance Library System for the use of their venues for the virtual symposium. Each virtual venue accomodated about 40 avatars. To attend, you needed to be registered with Second Life, have installed the Second Life client, and have a working version of the Quicktime viewer. Before the event, we recommended that people checked that they could view the video stream in the Virtual Congress Centre on Eduserv Island. A video tutorial explaining how to see and hear streaming media in Second Life is available on YouTube.
We asked all virtual delegates to join the Eduserv Symposium group in Second Life. This group was be used for announcements prior to the event and for discussion during the day itself. TaggingThe tag efsym2007 is being used to tag resources related to the 2007 Symposium via social software services such as del.icio.us, Technorati, Flickr and Slideshare. Please make use of the efsym2007 tag when tagging your own bookmarks, weblog posts, images etc. related to the Symposium.
